Lawyer Lin Shanglun says professional legal AI could erode the billable-hour model

Taiwan lawyer Lin Shanglun argues that professional legal AI is changing the economics of legal work and could eventually weaken the billable-hour model that has long defined the industry. In his article, he said a complex litigation brief that once took 30 to 60 hours can now be completed in 15 to 20 minutes with the right workflow and specialized tools. He drew a sharp line between consumer-facing GPT products and legal AI systems built for production use, saying the latter can retrieve real court decisions and statutory materials in real time and generate filings based on litigation structure and formal pleading requirements. Lin also said the gap comes down to system design. General-purpose chat tools used through a web interface, in his view, lack legal reasoning frameworks and live access to judicial practice materials, which is why users often see hallucinations or off-topic analysis. By contrast, he said legal AI systems connected through architectures such as MCP or API integrations can compare hundreds of thousands of court rulings within seconds. He added that even users without legal training can produce pleadings within 20 to 30 minutes if they follow a clear process and input the relevant facts and evidence. Given hourly legal fees ranging from $200 to more than $2,000, Lin said the traditional pricing structure may not survive if output of comparable quality can be generated in under half an hour.
